Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are there any membership initiation or cancellation fees? Do I have to buy your gear?

No. Our membership options are simple and straightforward with no hidden fees. There is not initiation fee or transaction fees paid by our members. While we do sell team gis, rashguards, shorts and other apparel, you have no obligation to buy them.

  • What should I wear to my first class? Do I need a Jiu-Jitsu uniform (gi)?

For your first class, you or your child should wear comfortable workout clothes—something snug enough to move around and grapple in. We provide loaner gis at the studio, so no need to worry if you don’t have one yet. If you decide to join, you’ll likely want to get your own gi. We have adult gis available for purchase at the studio, but it's not required. Children's gis can be easily found on Amazon or other online stores.

  • What is Valko Studio? How is it different from VALKO BJJ?

Valko Studio is our new, second location Jiu Jitsu school, created to bring high-quality Jiu Jitsu to kids and adults to the Northside of Chicago. Our goal is to make top-level Jiu Jitsu instruction accessible to everyone. VALKO BJJ is our larger headquarters, where our journey began. Both locations share the same commitment to excellence and community.

  • What's the Parking Situation?

There’s usually plenty of parking near the studio. Some spots are metered, but you’ll also find free neighborhood parking and free parking along Western Avenue. Just give yourself a few extra minutes before class to find a spot and you’ll be good to go!

  • Do you have showers?

    Coming soon!

  • Do I need to sign a waiver?
